Earth Pigments & PlasterJoin Pigment Hunter for an exploration on building with hempcrete near Cerro, NM for a adobe & hempcrete workshop. We will also focus on processing clays and minerals into pigments for natural plasters and paints. We will be using clay collected directly from the land and natural mineral pigments from the region to give color to the plasters and paints on adobe as well as hempcrete walls.
The workshop may provide an alternative location and project to apply locally harvested earth pigments as clay plaster, lime plaster, as a pigment in a finished aliz or lime wash paint depending on whether its being applied to interior or exterior surfaces. This alternative location from the land in Cerro is in part due to the closing of the title for the land. Once the title closes hopefully in the beginning of September then I can move a timber framed casita onto the land to infill with hempcrete or construct other natural buildings of adobe or strawbale to apply plasters and pigments to. There are other potential projects in the area that we can also apply these techniques such as to an adobe horno at the farmers market in Questa and other structures in the community. Regardless of the surfaces we will be applying these plasters and pigments to during the workshop. Participants will learn how to process raw materials into pigments using a ball mill or mortar and pestle as well as further refining the materials through techniques such as levigation in water or sifting through screens. These pigments will then be mixed with different binders that are ideal for specific types of surfaces whether they are interior or exterior. |
