EARTH PIGMENTS & PLASTER

Picture

Earth Pigments & Plaster

Join Pigment Hunter for an exploration on building with hempcrete near Cerro, NM for a adobe & hempcrete workshop. We will also focus on processing clays and minerals into pigments for natural plasters and paints.  We will be using clay collected directly from the land and natural mineral pigments from the region to give color to the plasters and paints on adobe as well as hempcrete walls.

The workshop may provide an alternative location and project to apply locally harvested earth pigments as clay plaster, lime plaster, as a pigment in a finished aliz or lime wash paint depending on whether its being applied to interior or exterior surfaces.

This alternative location from the land in Cerro is in part due to the closing of the title for the land. Once the title closes hopefully in the beginning of September then I can move a timber framed casita onto the land to infill with hempcrete or construct other natural buildings of adobe or strawbale to apply plasters and pigments to.

There are other potential projects in the area that we can also apply these techniques such as to an adobe horno at the farmers market in Questa and other structures in the community.

Regardless of the surfaces we will be applying these plasters and pigments to during the workshop. Participants will learn how to process raw materials into pigments using a ball mill or mortar and pestle as well as further refining the materials through techniques such as levigation in water or sifting through screens.  These pigments will then be mixed with different binders that are ideal for specific types of surfaces whether they are interior or exterior.

Traveling to Taos, Accommodations, & Preparations for the Workshop

I realize that Taos is probably not the easiest place to get to depending on where you are traveling from. So if you are traveling from a far off place you will need to figure out your own modes of transportation from planes, trains, and automobiles. You will also need to figure out your own accommodations for places to stay in a vacation rental, hotel, or camping spot. I can help guide you with potential options, but it is ultimately not part of the service that I am providing.

After you sign up for the workshop I will email you the location of the shop
processing Earth materials into pigments as well as the place where we will be applying the pigments for use in paint and plasters. The times for these workshops start at 12pm and end at 5pm, but will require some travel time prior to arriving at the destination for painting the mural as well as back to the place you are staying for the evening.

Please come prepared with water, snacks, and a lunch along with the proper shoes, hat, sunscreen, and clothing for a diversity of unpredictable weather here in Northern New Mexico where temperatures drop significantly from day to night.

Physical Requirements & Waiver for Liability

Please carefully consider the nature of this workshop will working at elevations above 7000 feet in sunshine that can be pretty intense so its important to stay hydrated and protected with proper clothing. If you are coming from sea level then the impacts of lower elevations are something to consider based on your own limitations. We will also be working on ladders and scaffolding to add color with the earth pigments paints and plasters to walls.

A waiver will be required for you to sign for liability purposes and you need to recognize your own limitations and the impacts it may have on your participation in the workshop. So please sign up if you feel that this workshop is right for you.

Cancellation Policy

After signing up for a workshop you have a 24 hour grace period immediately following the purchase to receive a refund. Beyond this 24 hour grace period, refunds will not be issued under any circumstance. If you need to cancel your reservation for the workshop after 24 hours of signing up your deposit can be used as credit for a future workshop or can be transferred to someone else who can attend the workshop you signed up for.
