Harvest plant color for dyes, inks and lake pigmentsThis two day workshop will explore the various uses of colors derived from plants for use as a dye, ink, or lake pigment that are growing in my dye garden as well as in the surrounding landscape.
I am timing this seasonally focused workshop with what is currently in peak bloom time at the date of the event. We will harvest plants from the dye garden such as Dyer's Chamomile as well as Chamisa a native plant from the local ecosystem. The flowers from both of these plants produce a beautiful yellow that we can make a dye bath for adding color to fabric, transform it into an ink for use on paper, and precipitate the yellow into a lake pigment for making paints that are as yellow as the rays of the Sun. Other plants growing in the dye garden and native ecosystem as well as plant material collected and dried from prior years will also be available to use for making a diversity of colors that we can also shift with the use of various modifiers creating a whole range of possibilities and hues. Ill provide the plant material for making dyes, inks, and lake pigments along with various mordants and modifiers. Ill also provide some paper and fabric samples to make color swatches with the plant dyes, inks and paints. Feel free to bring other pre-scoured or mordanted materials to dye. Please also bring your own watercolor sketchbook to make swatches of inks, paints, or take notes in. |
